In a few minutes, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, John McCain, will be here in Selma. It's an exciting thing to cover presidential candidates in a small town and in a small town newspaper. But the most exciting thing is to bring you guys the coverage on the Internet and in print. That's why we're here.

Late afternoon

Am sitting here about to write a story about Sen. John McCain coming to Selma. Still can't quite figure it out. He'll be here this weekend and is expected to speak on Monday.

Tonight there was real community spirit at Memorial Stadium. Perhaps the children will bring us all together.

Calendars and other things

A lot of people ask why we don't cover this or that. Probably because we don't know about the event. If something is going on at your school, you need to let us know as soon as you find out. If you call us the day of the event, or even a couple of days before the event, chances are we're planned out. Let us know what's going on in plenty of time.

My newsroom has taken a beating over our coverage of Morgan Academy's beauty contest. We would cover others if they would let us know IN AMPLE TIME TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. It's not so hard.

Cruising through the wire

OK. Just looking through The Associated Press wire for what's happening in the world, and stumbled on the story below. Science has taken us many places...this is different...

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — The widow of a soldier killed in Iraq this week is in a fight against time and her mother-in-law to harvest her husband's sperm before he is embalmed.

Army Sgt. Dayne Darren Dhanoolal was killed on Monday when a roadside bomb tore through the Husky mine-detecting vehicle he was driving in Iraq. The 26-year-old combat engineer was assigned to Fort Benning's 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment and was scheduled to come home just weeks before his death.

Upon his return, his wife, Kynesha Dhanoolal said they planned to start a family. In November, she had surgery to remove uterine fibroid tumors to clear the way for conception.

Opening night

The Biscuits opened up the 2008 season Thursday night. A loss, but the crowd was good. We need an outfield. Gave up three doubles and a triple to a lesser team.
